Misti May Treanor Tears Achilles tendon on Dancing with the Stars

Misti May Treanor Achilles tendon injury
requires surgery and a long recovery

Misti May Treanor in Manhattan Beach Sept. 2008

Just when you thought the stock in the AVP’s biggest rising star
could not get any bigger, the unthinkable happens as Misti May Treanor
tears an Achilles tendon while practicing for her “Dancing with the Stars”
TV show in Los Angeles.

Misty is sort of philosophical about her injury – she’s going into surgery tomorrow and has full hopes of recovery. She was planning on taking a year off volleyball anyway, so now she’ll just mend up and spend some time with her family, reports the Dancing with the Stars blog.

Maksim and Misty trade kind words, and she vows to come back to the show and dance the jive again.

Maksim says, “Misty gave it her all. I’m very proud of her and I couldn’t ask for a better partner.”

If Misti May Treanor has to take a year off to recover and heal, what does that do for her partner Kerri Walsh and her 2009 season?

The AVP Tour begins in spring and it will be interesting to see what happens as the season gets ready to begin. Even more interesting will be to see which womens team or teams step up to become dominant in 2009 and if Kerri Walsh picks another partner to play with during the recovery.

The AVP Tour will greatly miss their 2 time gold winning olympic champion
but for Misti May Treanor this will be a good time to relax and try to spend more time with her husband Matt, who play for the Tampa Bay Rays baseball team and has his own 162+ game season obligations.

“This may be a blessing for Misti May Treanor”, said SoCal Beaches Magazine columnist Trever Hugh. “What more can you do than go on a year winning streak and capture your second olympic gold medal”? “Misti has done everything possible on the AVP Beach Volleyball Tour and now she can get some well deserved time with her husband and focus on her health and recovery”. “We will miss her although I am sure she will be doing bits with FOX Sports to help broadcast the games and provide insight which will keep her in the spotlight”.

It will be interesting to see what happens going into the 2009 season, not only with Misti, but with her partner Kerri Walsh………stay tuned…….in the meantime Misti get well and go watch Matt win the World Series….Go Rays!

Heavenly Vacations in Mission Beach

Mission Beach San Diego Ca., 92109

When it comes to great places to vacation and visit, none are better in
San Diego than Mission Beach.

“Mission Beach is the top beach destination in Southern California”, said SoCal Beaches Magazine editor Mark Fitgerald. “It offers everything that larger beaches offer in Los Angeles, but with a more boutique and small town attitude”.

Mission beach is unique in that it is covered by water on both sides of a 3 mile peninsula. “Mission Beach is only 2 blocks wide with the Pacific Ocean on one side and Mission Bay on the other”. Fitzgerald claims that this is what makes Mission Beach the best one in Southern California.

“On the ocean side of Mission Beach you have surfing and kite boarding and on the “bay” side you have water skiiing, jet skis, sail boats and hobie craft which provides something for everyone”.  “Add in the fact that there are miles of great boardwalks with palm trees and green grass and you see why Mission Beach is our  editors choice”.

Mission Beach offers a wide range of vacation rentals for tourists visiting the area. You have beach front and oceanfront condos and townhomes along with cottages and homes along the courts and walkways in Mission Beach that sometimes are the most cost effective.

“We have over 150 vacation rentals in our Mission Beach database”, commented Rick Nelson, who helps manage the rentals in the SoCal Beaches Magazine database along with over 20 other local San Diego based websites.

“Right now owners of vacation rentals are offering some great specials to make up for some fo the costs with gas and other travel expenses”.

Nelson says that now is one of the best times to book vacation rentals in San Diego because many owners are looking for keeping places full in the off season and making sure they fill up early for summer of 2008.

San Diego Panda Cam Showcases Bai Yun and Shi Shi

Panda Cam Ranks as #1 San Diego Web Cam
The San Diego Zoo San Diego California

When it comes to popular web cams and streaming video in San Diego
and Southern California nothing beats the “Panda Cam” at the San Diego Zoo.

The San Diego Zoo has had a love affair with giant pandas ever since two of the black-and-white bears came to visit in 1987. After years of red tape and tons of application paperwork, the Zoo and China agreed on a 12-year research loan of two giant pandas, Bai Yun and Shi Shi.

The Panda Cam” at the San Diego Zoo gets about 2.8 million monthly visitors”, said tech Ray Dellerson, who with I2B Networks in San Diego provides the feed for the zoo web cams and those at SeaWorld San Diego.

The pandas draw the most traffic, but other cams like the “Shamu Cam” at SeaWorld also boast some big numbers also including over 400,000 monthly visitors and a new “penguin cam” set to go in by the end of the year.

“Advertisers are seeing that live streaming video is a very cost effective way to bring people to the website compared to print advertising”. Advertisers are looking for a way to maximize their advertising dollars with the most exposure possible and live streaming video is the newest wave of internet media to become popular”.

OMBAC Longboard Classic Brings Back the “Endless Summer” Era

2008 OMBAC Longboard Classic Surf Contest
Sept. 21 2008 – The Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach

A surfer "walks the plank" and prepares to "hang 10"

The 2008 OMBAC Longboard Classic once again provided the excitement
and fun that would remind many older surfers of days gone by.

The event was held just north of The Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach and featured classic surfboards from the 1950’s and 1960’s.

The event also requires that all boards be at least 10 feet long to make it a
real longboarding event.

“This event is one of the best surfing events in San Diego and OMBAC does a great job using this as a way to raise money for local charities”, said Bob Anderson a “PB” local and avid long board surfer.

Classic pre 1970 Longboards at the 2008 OMBAC Surf Classic

Classic pre 1970 Longboards at the 2008 OMBAC Surf Classic

The OMBAC surf classic does a great job bringing out the “Endless Summer”
lifestyle and many of the participants are from the era of The Beach Boy’s and longbaords hanging out of the back of a woodie.

It is also nice to see a younger generation of surfers partaking in the event and enjoying the California beaches just as their parents did 25 years before.

The whole term “hang 10″ started when longboard surfers were hanging all ten toes off the front of the board while riding. Not something you see very much anymore with all the new short boards in the water.

The OMBAC Surf Classic is a great event to watch from the pier, the beach or online with our www.pacificbeachsurfcam.com

Jennifer Boss and John Hyden Win AVP MVP Crowns

HYDEN, BOSS CROWNED BEST OF THE BEACH AT SEASON-ENDING AVP CROCS SANDERSON FORD BEST OF THE BEACH PRESENTED BY RIDENOW POWERSPORTS

John Hyden smashes a shot past Phil Dalhausser

John Hyden smashes a shot past Phil Dalhausser

GLENDALE, Ariz. September 27, 2008 – John Hyden and Jen Boss won the right to be called the Best on the Beach Saturday night at the AVP Crocs Tour’s All Star Game and final event, the AVP Crocs Best of the Beach presented by RideNow Powersports.

Hyden, 2007 God of the Beach and the No. 10 seed for this tournament, chose gold medalist and No. 2 seed Phil Dalhausser as his partner for the finals against Jake Gibb, who selected AVP veteran and 2004 Olympian Stein Metzger (ranked eighth going into this week’s event) as his partner for the final. Hyden was victorious with a score of 21-17, 21-17.

“The hardest part is getting to the finals,” said Hyden. “Once you pick up Phil, it’s all downhill from there.”

“It turns out this is his event,” said Dalhausser of his partner’s repeat victory.

The last time a male player won consecutive individual format tournaments was in the early 1990’s, when Karch Kiraly won in 1991, 1992 and 1993. This week, Hyden went 6-0 in matches, losing just one set (in his first match of the event). He has never played with Dalhausser in a regular AVP Crocs Tour event.

Fifth-seeded Gibb, who entering the final went 6-0 in matches and did not lose a set in second-round pool play, has played 20 regular events with Metzger, winning four times and playing in seven finals. In 2005, they were the AVP team of the Year and won the Manhattan Beach Open.

“It was a no-brainer for me,” said Gibb of his choosing Metzger. “We’ve always played well together.”

Jennifer Boss at Mariners Point in Mission Beach 2008

On the women’s side, No. 3 seed Jen Boss selected two-time gold medalist and top seed Kerri Walsh to join her in the finals, while No. 6 seed Nicole Branagh selected Tyra Turner, ranked eighth this weekend. Boss claimed both the event title and her first career AVP Tour victory with a score of 19-21, 21-17, 15-10.

“It means a lot,” said Boss of her win. “It was like fourteen times [in the finals], you start thinking, ‘Geez, I’m a jinx.’ I just honestly couldn’t believe it.”

Boss went 3-0 in matches this weekend and is the only player (male or female) to earn a bye in the first round and still make it to the finals. She has never played with Kerri Walsh in a regular season event.

Branagh went 5-1 in matches, losing in her last match of the event prior to the finals. Saturday marked the second straight day of having to play three matches in one day. She has two AVP Crocs Tour wins this season (Charleston and Cincinnati), finished fifth in Beijing (with regular-season partner Elaine Youngs). She has never played with Tyra Turner in a regular event.

The AVP Crocs Tour will resume in January 2009 with the return of the Hot Winter Nights Tour. The 17-stop indoor tour will bring a taste of summer to cities snowbound in the dead of winter. The tour begins January 15 at the Times Union Center in Albany, N.Y. For complete winter tour dates and information, please visit avp.com.

2008 AVP Manhattan Beach Open Wraps Up
Another Dominant Season for May-Treanor / Walsh
and Rogers / Dalhausser

Misti May Treanor prepares to spike a ball

Misti May Treanor prepares to spike a ball

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. (Sept. 20, 2008) – Top seed and Olympic gold medalists Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh won their unprecedented fifth AVP Crocs Tour Manhattan Beach Open Saturday

May-Treanor and Walsh beat fourth-seeded Jen Boss and April Ross, 21-18, 21-16, in the final to win the most sought-after title in beach volleyball. The final match will air nationally on FOX following the NFL broadcast (check local listings)

“We’re up there with the greats,” said May-Treanor, referring to putting another plaque on the Manhattan Beach Pier – their unprecedented fourth in a row – an honor awarded to every Manhattan Beach Open champion. “I don’t know if there’s another team who can do four in a row.”

May-Treanor and Walsh, who also clinched the AVP Crocs Cup, the AVP season-long championship, pocketed $100,000 for the win, the largest winner’s check in beach volleyball history.

But to do it, they had to come through the contenders’ bracket for just the fourth time in their six years as a team on the AVP Crocs Tour.

Saturday morning, they lost to Boss and Ross in the quarterfinals, 24-22, 15-21, 15-11, before playing their way back into the final via wins over 10th-seeded Lauren Fendrick/Paula Roca, 21-14, 21-14, and third-seeded Annett Davis/Jenny Johnson Jordan, 21-11, 21-18.

This loss came at the heels of two straight tournaments following Beijing in which May-Treanor and Walsh failed to win a title after winning 19 straight. They had also won 112 straight matches before losing in Mason, Ohio, the first tournament after Beijing. A week later, they lost in Santa Barbara in the semifinals and took third. All of this inspired talk of a post-Olympic letdown.

“Were we hungry?” May-Treanor said. “Yeah, we were very hungry for a win here.”

This is the 17th of 18 events on the AVP schedule this year and the last of the team events, as next week’s tournament in Glendale, Ariz., is a format in which partners are mixed up known as “Best of the Beach.”

This season as a team, May-Treanor and Walsh won 12 AVP Crocs Tour titles, three international titles, an Olympic gold medal and had an overall AVP match record of 70-3, all three losses coming in the last four weeks.

DALHAUSSER, ROGERS WRAP UP SEASON OF DOMINANCE WITH WIN AT AVP CROCS CUP SHOOTOUT PRESENTED BY BUD LIGHT MANATTAN BEACH OPEN

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. (Sept. 21, 2008) – Top seed and Olympic gold medalists Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers won their third straight AVP Crocs Tour Manhattan Beach Open Saturday.

Dalhausser and Rogers beat third-seeded Nick Lucena and Sean Scott, 21-16, 21-15, in the final to win the most sought-after title in beach volleyball. They join three teams who have won at least three straight Manhattan Beach Opens, including the legendary teams of Mike Dodd/Tim Hovland and Karch Kiraly/Kent Steffes.

“That’s illustrious company,” Rogers said. “If you follow beach volleyball history, Manhattan means a lot.”

Rogers and Dalhausser won $100,000 – matching the largest winner’s check in beach volleyball history – and the Crocs Cup, the AVP season-long championship.

Overall this year, Dalhausser and Rogers won 11 of the 14 AVP Crocs Tour events they played and four international events, including the gold medal. This is the 17th of 18 events on the AVP Crocs Tour schedule and the final team event.

Over 250 classic “woodies” assembled at Moonlight Beach
in Encinitas for the annual “Wavecrest Woody Car Show”
Sept. 20 2008.

The classic car show features woodies of all kinds from the
30’s, 40’s 50’s and 60’s.

“These cars are one of a kind and many of the owners still
take them down to the beach and use them as surf vehicles”,

said Donovan Mario a local Southern California resident and
woodie owner.

“These are the cars from the “Endless Summer” era and earlier and they represent the Southern California lifestyle”!

For many of the owners and onlookers, this is the “best” woodie show in the country.

“Yes we are the largest woodie show in the USA, but we also want

to provide the best location and organize activities for the car owners to do while they are here”, commented Rick Nelson a local volunteer.

This event is actually a 4 day event and a real good time for car owners to get together and learn more about their cars and woodie car history

Come with us as we check out some of the photos and video from the 2008 Wavecrest Woodie Car Show below.

2008 Bayfair San Diego Powerboat Races Mission Bay

2008 Bayfair San Diego Powerboat Races Mission Bay

Question:
What happens when you take airplane and helicopter jet engines that deliver over 3,000 horse power and strap them to boats on Mission Bay?

Answer:
You get a vehicle that goes over 200 miles per hour and skims over the waves and gets tens of thousands of people cheering on the beach.

That is what went on in Mission Bay as the 2008 Bayfair San Diego Powerboat Races were held at Ski Beach and Crown Point in front of thousands of cheering fans from all over the country.

“I am here from Madison Indiana to watch the “Oh Boy Oberto race team” said Vicki Jensen who with her husband made the trip to San Diego.

“This is an event we have planned for at least 6 months”, she said.

The Bayfair San Diego Powerboat Races feature boats from a multitude of classes including cracker box, drag boats, offshore powerboats and the unlimited class of hydroplanes just to name a few.

Bayfair San Diego was formerly called “The San Diego Thunderboat Regatta”, until they ran out of sponsors and needed help to continue. The event needed help and was rescued by Race Marketing Partners LLC.

Race Marketing Partners are dedicated to continuing the tradition of hydroplane racing on Mission Bay and enhancing the event with new sponsors. “They have done an amazing job this year with the event”, said Tom Craft, a local fan who has followed the powerboat races for the last 15+ years. “There seems to be an added excitement as the RMP Group has brought in an excellent team of professionals to grow the event”.

In addition to the normal excitement the powerboats bring an extra celebration was in order after the 2A unlimited heat as Steve David and
the “Oh Boy Oberto” team won the national points lead and “World Series of Powerboat Racing Season Title”.

David was greeted by friends and crew members after coming in from his season winning ride.
